The Opportunity

Braintec is seeking an experienced Investment & Finance Lead to lead the design and execution of the investment pipeline strategy for water sector SMEs, Water Service Providers (WSPs), and PPP operators.

This is a senior role to shape how Braintec’s flagship market systems development assignments connect enterprise performance improvements to real, structured financing.

Reporting to the Water Market Systems & Business Development Services (BDS) Lead, the successful candidate will define investment readiness criteria, lead financial diagnostics and modelling, structure financing solutions, and build relationships with commercial banks, MFIs, and impact investors, working closely with the BDS team to convert enterprise performance gains into a well-managed, bankable investment pipeline.

The role will also provide technical support to Braintec’s Business Development Services (BDS) interventions, particularly in areas of financial management, business planning, commercial viability, cost recovery, pricing, financial record keeping and enterprise growth. Working with the Water Market Systems & BDS Lead and field teams, the Investment & Finance Lead will help translate enterprise diagnostics into practical business improvement actions and progressively prepare enterprises for investment.

  • Assess and mitigate key investment risks (technical reliability, revenue volatility, regulatory uncertainty).

3. Business Development Services (BDS) & Enterprise Strengthening

  • Support the Water Market Systems & BDS Lead in designing and delivering BDS interventions for SMEs, WSPs, PPP operators and other programme-supported enterprises.
  • Translate financial and business diagnostics into practical enterprise improvement plans and targeted BDS support.
  • Provide technical support in business planning, budgeting, cash-flow management, pricing, cost recovery, working-capital management and financial record keeping.
  • Support enterprises to strengthen financial controls, management reporting and basic financial management.
  • Support development and review of business plans, financial projections and commercially viable growth strategies.
  • Coach and mentor enterprises on financial management and investment-readiness requirements, working alongside BDS and field teams.
  • Identify financial and commercial performance gaps that need to be addressed before enterprises progress into the investment pipeline.
  • Contribute financial and commercial content to BDS tools, training materials, enterprise improvement plans and coaching packages.

4. Financing Structuring & Financial Institution Engagement

  • Structure financing solutions including loans, blended finance, grants, and PPP arrangements.
  • Engage commercial banks, MFIs, investor platforms, and impact investors to develop viable financing pathways.
  • Facilitate enterprise – FI engagement processes including pitching, negotiation, and structuring.

5. Pipeline Development & Deal Progression

  • Guide preparation of business plans, investment memoranda, and due diligence packages.
  • Ensure alignment between BDS-driven performance improvements and financing requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with the Water Market Systems & BDS Lead to identify and prioritize high-potential enterprises.
  • Oversee development and management of the investment pipeline (screening, prioritization, readiness staging, deal progression).
  • Monitor deal conversion rates and identify bottlenecks in financing processes.

6. Enterprise Financial Management, BDS & Policy Engagement

  • Support strengthening of financial systems within SMEs (record keeping, reporting, management) in collaboration with field teams.
  • Provide inputs into policy and regulatory discussions affecting the investment climate.
  • Support enterprises to implement practical financial-management improvements identified through BDS diagnostics and improvement plans.
  • Develop or adapt simple financial management tools appropriate to SMEs and water service providers, including cash-flow forecasts, costing tools, budgeting templates, management accounts and financial-performance dashboards.
  • Track improvements in enterprise financial performance and use the results to determine progression toward investment readiness.

7. Knowledge Management & Scaling

  • Contribute to development of scalable financing models and replication strategies.
  • Document investment cases, lessons learned, and pipeline performance.
