The Business Development & Investment Associate combines enterprise-development (BDS) support with investment and finance facilitation, helping enterprises strengthen commercial performance and progress toward financing.

The Opportunity

Braintec is seeking a hands-on and field-oriented Business Development & Investment Associate to support enterprise diagnostics, business coaching, and investment facilitation for Water Service Providers (WSPs), SMEs, and PPP operators.

The position combines practical enterprise-development support with investment and finance facilitation. The successful candidate will help diagnose business constraints, coach enterprises on operational and financial improvement, and support their progression toward structured financing.

The emphasis is on practical field delivery: understanding how an enterprise’s business practices and financial position together determine its readiness for investment. Specialist financial structuring or complex deal negotiation remains with the Investment & Finance Lead; this role provides the field-level bridge between enterprise strengthening and the investment pipeline.

Reporting to the Investment & Finance Lead, the successful candidate will conduct combined enterprise and financial diagnostics, deliver hands-on BDS coaching, support financial systems strengthening, facilitate engagement with financial institutions, and maintain the field-level investment pipeline.

Key Responsibilities

1. Enterprise & Financial Diagnostics

  • Support identification, onboarding, and profiling of WSPs, SMEs, and PPP operators.
  • Conduct integrated enterprise diagnostics covering business operations, revenue streams, cost structures, customer base, management practices, and financial accountability.
  • Collect and validate financial and operational data (revenues, costs, assets, liabilities, cashflows) for enterprise assessments.
  • Support classification of actors by performance, maturity, and investment readiness.

2. Business & Financial Improvement

  • Assist in development and implementation of business improvement plans (tariff setting, revenue collection, cost control, customer management).
  • Support rollout of business SOPs (billing systems, financial record keeping, customer tracking, inventory management).
  • Assist enterprises in strengthening financial management practices (record keeping, budgeting, cash flow tracking, basic financial reporting).
  • Support strengthening of cost recovery mechanisms and revenue optimization strategies.

3. Investment Facilitation & Financing Support

  • Assist in development of basic financial models (cashflow projections, cost recovery scenarios, CAPEX/OPEX inputs).
  • Support preparation of business plans, investment cases, and financial documentation required by lenders and investors.
  • Assist in structuring financing packages, including loan sizing, repayment schedules, and blended finance components.
  • Facilitate engagement between enterprises and financial institutions (banks, MFIs, investors), including pitch sessions and financial literacy support.
  • Follow up on loan application processes and ensure timely submission of required documentation.

4. Coaching, Mentoring & Follow-Up

  • Deliver hands-on coaching and mentoring to enterprises on business operations, financial management, and investment readiness.
  • Conduct regular follow-up visits to track adoption of BDS and financial interventions and identify gaps.
  • Escalate complex technical, engineering, financing, or investment structuring issues to the relevant Braintec specialist team.

5. Pipeline Tracking & Performance Monitoring

  • Maintain and update the field-level investment pipeline tracker (screening, readiness stage, engagement status, deal progression).
  • Track enterprise performance indicators (revenue growth, customer expansion, payment compliance, cost recovery) over time.
  • Monitor performance of enterprises progressing toward financing and flag gaps to the Investment & Finance Lead.
  • Support identification of financial risks (poor cost recovery, weak cashflows, pricing inefficiencies) and coordinate with the Risk Management Associate as needed.

6. Documentation & Knowledge Management

  • Document enterprise performance improvements, financing processes, and case studies across corridors.
  • Contribute to reporting on key investment indicators (number of enterprises financed, volume of capital mobilized, conversion rates) for assignment management and donors.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Agribusiness, Development Studies, or another relevant discipline.
  • A combination of relevant training and demonstrated practical enterprise-development or finance experience will also be considered.

Professional Experience

The ideal candidate will demonstrate;

  • Minimum 3–5 years’ professional experience in enterprise development, business development services, SME finance, or investment facilitation, ideally within donor-funded field assignments.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting enterprise diagnostics and collecting/validating financial and operational data.
  • Practical experience delivering hands-on coaching and mentoring to small enterprises or community-managed systems.
  • Experience supporting rollout of business SOPs and basic financial management systems.
  • Working knowledge of basic financial modelling, business planning, and investment readiness documentation.
  • Experience facilitating engagement between enterprises and financial institutions is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience working in Somalia or the Horn of Africa, including in fragile or conflict-affected environments, will be an added advantage.

Core Competencies

The successful candidate should demonstrate;

  • Strong practical understanding of both business development services and basic enterprise finance.
  • Ability to connect business performance improvements to investment readiness.
  • Good financial literacy, including bookkeeping, cash flow, and cost recovery concepts.
  • Strong interpersonal and coaching skills, with the ability to build trust with enterprises and community actors.
  • Ability to work independently in field locations with regular travel.
  • Good data collection, documentation, and reporting skills.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with Technical, Investment & Finance, and Risk Management teams.
  • High standards of integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
